March 2019 Events in Sonora, Mexico

The Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6. Before Lent, carnavals are celebrated in Guaymas and Puerto Penasco to enjoy parties before the onset of the Lenten season.

During Lent, many of Sonora’s indigenous groups hold ceremonies, processions and other observances that culminate in the last week before Easter Sunday, Semana Santa, in April.

For example, in some Mayo and Yaqui pueblos a “Conti” is held every Friday during Lent, when fariseos, church representatives and the community gather for a reunion and procession to the stations of the cross.

Other notable events during March include the International Film Festival in Alamos and the Vino Litoral wine festival in San Carlos.

Ash Wednesday

The beginning of Lent, 46 days before Easter, when many Sonorans will go to church to receive a blessing with a cross of ashes on their forehead. Lent is a sacred time in Sonora, a time of sacrifice and religious observance, especially for many of the indigenous groups.

23rd Anniversary of XEETCH

Indigenous radio station XEETCH, the “Voice of the Three Rivers” in Etchojoa, Sonora, celebrates its 23rd anniversary on March 8 and 9 with vendors of art and crafts, authors, healers, religious artifacts, dancers, traditional food kitchens and performances.

An event that promotes the culture of wine and seafood. The second annual edition of this event will be one day instead of two and will again feature wines from Sonora and Baja California wineries, food from local restaurants, art exhibitions and various conferences and workshops.

Tickets cost 500 pesos and are available for purchase at the Marinaterra in San Carlos, La Cubiella in Hermosillo and La Cullita restaurants in Ciudad Obregon, Navojoa and Huatabampo. Proceeds from the the event will benefit: Estoy Contigo Guaymas IAP, Fundación LYRI México sin Lyme Ni Rickettsia and la Fundación de Maquilas Tetakawi.

Biosphere Reserve of El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar

A weekend camping outing in with a cultural and historic focus on Jesuit missionary Father Eusebio Francisco Kino. Participants will listen to lectures and experience art presented by members of the Tohono O’odham Nation, in addition to watching documentaries about the life and work of Father Kino. Presented by Cultura Arte Peñasco, the Tohono O’odham nation, the Historical Studies Foundation and the Municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts, part of the XXIII City Council of Puerto Peñasco. Short for Exposición Ganadera (Livestock Exposition), ExpoGans are common festivals in Sonora, with the largest held in Hermosillo in May and June. The Imuris fiestas will include live music and displays, cultural exhibits, dancing horses, a rodeo, the coronation of the queen of the ExpoGan, and cockfighting.

Natalicio de Benito Juarez – Benito Juarez’s Birthday (observed on Monday, March 19)
A national public holiday, celebrated on March 21.

Benito Juarez went from humble beginnings as a Zapotec Indian to become Mexico’s only indigenous president. Juarez enacted many social advancements, such as establishing free and mandatory education and establishing the separation of church and state, and is often referred to as the Abraham Lincoln of Mexican presidents.

The first week of April 2018 marks the end of the Easter vacations in Sonora. The days around the 6th of April are celebrated in Caborca as the Fiestas 6 de Abril, which commemorate the town’s defense against a group of American “filibusteros” who tried to annex the municipality in 1857.

Other April events include a book bazaar, dance exhibit and an indigenous Seri festival, and the last day of the month is the traditional Day of the Children (Día de los Niños), when it truly is good to be a child in Sonora.

While the major celebrations for Easter occur during Semana Santa, the week before Easter, many also observe the week after Easter by taking a Spring vacation as well.

Festival to Commemorate the Heroic Deeds of the 6th of April

Sponsored by the Municipal Government (Ayuntamiento) of Caborca and the Dirección de Acción Cívica y Cultural of Caborca.

This is the biggest annual event in Caborca, to celebrate the victory of the citizens of Caborca and the Mexican Army over a group of “filibusteros” from California who attempted to annex the town in 1857. This will be the fifth year of the festival, the following topics will be addressed: Identity, Memory and Community Cohesion. The Sonora events calendar starts the year by finishing the 2017 Christmas season, which officially ends on January 6, the Dia de Reyes. The month ends with what has become a massive cultural and arts festival, the Festival Cultural Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado, also known as FAOT. Tens of thousands flock to the epicenter of Alamos, Sonora, and concerts are also performed in Hermosillo and other Sonoran cities.

Dia de Reyes – Kings Day
January 6
Mexican children receive gifts from the three kings (the Magi) on this day, which is the traditional end to the Christmas season. This is also the day when people buy special circular bread called a “rosca.” Inside every rosca there is a plastic figurine of Jesus, and whoever gets the piece that contains the plastic Jesus is obligated to provide tamales for Candlemas (Dia de la Candelaria) on the 2nd of February.

Alamos Cultural Festival – Festival Cultural Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado

This annual festival, commonly known as the “FAOT,” is named in honor of Alamos doctor and philanthropist Alfonso Ortiz Tirado, who was also an accomplished opera singer.

The event highlights operatic singing and chamber music, but a variety of popular music and art are also featured – not only in Alamos, but in other cities in Sonora as well, where concerts are performed during the week.

This event has steadily grown in popularity and is now one of Sonora’s most important cultural events, drawing over 100,000 people from many different countries. 2018 marked the 34th year of the festival. More information

This last month of the year is when two of the country’s biggest religious events occur, the feast day of Mexico’s patron saint, the Virgin of Guadalupe, and Christmas. The Christmas season is also a time when friends, families and coworkers get together for the seasonal fiestas known as posadas.

Primer Festival Cultural “Sauce en el Agua”

Hustabampo, Sonora
This cultural and arts festival celebrates the 142nd anniversary of the founding of Huatabampo. Its name reflects the meaning of the name Huatabampo, words in the language of the Mayo that mean “willow in the water.”

Fiesta of the Virgin of Guadalupe
December 12th
This is a major religious holiday in Mexico, as most pueblos hold celebrations in honor of the country’s patron saint.

Las Posadas
December 16th to 24th
This is the traditional Christmas party season, so named in remembrance of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem.

Navidad – Christmas
December 25th
The last posada is held on Christmas Eve, also known as Noche Buena, when families traditionally have a late-night dinner.

Happenings and events in the state of Sonora, Mexico for the month of November, 2017. November begins with the traditional remembrance days of All Saints Day and Dia de Muertos. It is also the month when the Mexican Revolution is celebrated, and there are also some other great events to see in different parts of Sonora.

All Saints Day – Día de todos los Santos

This is best known as the Catholic feast day of All Saints, and it is also the day when children who have passed away are remembered.

Day of the Dead – Dia de Muertos

This date is also the Catholic feast day of All Souls – Fieles Difuntos
Deceased relatives are remembered and honored in cemeteries and family homes throughout Mexico in this unique cultural celebration. In Sonora, this includes the construction of shrines in homes and public places, to honor the recently deceased. Read more about Day of the Dead in Sonora.

Noche Magia Cultural Yoreme
November 3, Huatabampo
A festival that celebrates the culture of the Yoreme Mayo. The event features dance, poetry, stories, food, traditional music and popular indigenous music. Starting at 7:00 p.m. in Plaza Juarez in Huatabampo.

Dia de Muertos Altares y Catrinas
November 4, Puerto Peñasco

The coastal resort city of Puerto Peñasco will celebrate the Day of the Dead on November 4, with catrinas and displays of ofrendas, Day of the Dead altars. The event starts at 5:00 p.m. at the Mercado de las Artesanias on Calle 32, also known as Rodeo Drive.

Paseo Annual SLRC – Golfo de Santa Clara

The Paseo San Luis – el Golfo  is an annual 112km (about 70 miles) cycle tour organized with the purpose of promoting cycling as a sport and promoting tourism in the municipality of San Luis Río Colorado.

Shrimp Festival

Rocky Point Rally

This annual biker fest is not only a lot of fun, but it also raises money for charitable causes.  Events include a poker run, stunt shows, and other biker competitions.  You don’t need to be a biker to enjoy and participate in the event, there will be a variety of other fiestas as well.  More information

Día de la Revolucion – Revolution Day

Parades and festivals mark this anniversary of the 1910 Mexican Revolution.  While not as big as the September 16th Independence Day celebrations, schools, banks and government offices are closed in observance of this national holiday.

Festival of Our Lady of Balvanera
November 20th, La Aduana
This annual festival honors the Virgin of Balvanera in the small pueblo of La Aduana, Sonora (near Alamos). Many of the faithful walk the 20+ mile route from Navojoa to La Aduana to express their devotion to the Virgin of Balvanera.

Christmas Parade

An evening Christmas lights parade that culminates in the lighting of the Christmas tree in the city plaza.
