The second killing of a Guaymas councilor’s child this year

The 32-year-old son of a Guaymas municipal councilwoman was killed on July 1, in an action apparently meant to threaten municipal officials.

The body of Andrés de Jesús Rodríguez Jiménez was dumped on the road from a moving car in Colonia Gil Samaniego in South Guaymas. The car, with several passengers, fled the scene.

Rodríguez Jiménez was the son of councilwoman Susana Jiménez.

Second child of a municipal councilor murdered this year

The killing was the second murder of the child of a Guaymas municipal councilor this year.

On February 16, the son of Guaymas National Action Party (PAN) councilwoman Mónica Martínez died in a hail of gunfire from several gunmen. His body was dumped in the Niza sector, in North Guaymas.

Civic instability?

There have been several murders of Sonoran municipal officials in the past two years.

On the same day that Jesus Rodriguez’s body was dumped in Guaymas, the comptroller of that municipality received a phone call that demanded he resign or be killed. The threat was serious; his predecessor had been gunned down while driving on a main street in Guaymas last year.

It is a disturbing series of events that may indicate attempts by organized crime to increase their influence in municipal governments.

Which may also indicate a weakening of the democratic system at the local level in Sonora, Mexico that could destabilize the entire state.
