Pomegranate Season Returns to Hermosillo from Magdalena de Kino
Sonoran newspaper El Imparcial reports that pomegranate season has officially returned to Hermosillo, with fresh fruit arriving directly from Magdalena de Kino and the surrounding Terrenate region.
Vendors in the city’s historic downtown say the vibrant red fruit is one of the most anticipated seasonal treats in Sonora. Rich in antioxidants and essential nutrients, pomegranates are especially popular among older residents who appreciate the ritual of carefully peeling and savoring the fruit.
“The pomegranate sales have been good, just like every year,” said Jesús Figueroa, who sells regional produce on Guerrero Street in front of the Municipal Market. “The fruit is very good quality. It’s clean, organic, and full of antioxidants.”
Pomegranates in Sonora are typically available from October through December, making their arrival an annual fall and early-winter tradition. Figueroa notes that many younger people prefer fast food, while older generations take the time to enjoy seasonal fruits like pomegranate.
“This fruit is very good for your health — full of antioxidants, vitamin C and iron. It’s great for the blood and helps prevent illness,” he added.
Other vendors, including Karen Romo Segura, travel weekly with their families from Magdalena to Hermosillo to sell the fruit.
“Thank God, business has been very good,” Romo said. “I set up around 9:00 in the morning and leave around 2:00 in the afternoon, and I sell about two boxes a day, each weighing around 20 kilos.”
Along with pomegranates, vendors are also offering seasonal products such as figs, squash, oranges, strawberries, and local greens.
Where to Buy
Most vendors can be found near Municipal Market No. 1 in downtown Hermosillo and along Serdán Street, especially near the BBVA bank. And if you do not want to drive to Hermosillo you will likely find some in Magdalena.
Prices
Prices vary slightly, but most vendors offer three pomegranates for 50–60 pesos ($2.75-$3.25).
Visitors are advised to look for fruit that is firm, deep pink to red in color, unbruised, and heavy for its size — signs of top quality and freshness.
