Hermosillo Earns “Tree Cities of the World” Recognition for Second Year
Hermosillo continues to strengthen its reputation as a modern and environmentally conscious destination, earning the “Tree Cities of the World” designation for the second consecutive year.
The recognition, awarded by the Arbor Day Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organization, highlights cities that demonstrate strong leadership in urban forestry and environmental stewardship.
A Growing Green Identity
City officials announced that Hermosillo not only met international standards but exceeded them through ongoing efforts to expand and maintain its urban tree canopy.
Key initiatives include cultivating native species at the Municipal Nursery, donating trees to residents, and expanding reforestation programs across the city. These efforts are helping transform Hermosillo into a greener, more livable city for both residents and visitors.
Guayacán Trees Planted in Parque Madero
As part of the celebration, and in recognition of International Women’s Day, local authorities planted eight guayacán trees in Parque Madero, one of the city’s most important urban parks.
The guayacán, known for its vibrant purple blossoms, carries special meaning. It symbolizes strength and resilience, is associated with the historical struggle of women, and is considered a protected species due to risk of extinction.
International Recognition, Local Impact
The “Tree Cities of the World” program recognizes cities that implement effective urban forestry policies, promote community participation, and invest in sustainable green infrastructure.
In Hermosillo, this recognition reflects a growing culture of environmental awareness and collaboration between government and citizens.
Why It Matters for Visitors
For travelers, this means more than just recognition. It translates into more shaded public spaces, improved parks and walkability, and a city increasingly focused on quality of life.
Hermosillo is not only a gateway to Sonora, it is a destination that blends urban development with environmental sustainability.
