October Events in Sonora

October Events and Celebrations

October in Sonora marks a beautiful seasonal transition. The intense summer heat softens, desert evenings grow cooler, and communities begin preparing for some of the region’s most meaningful cultural traditions. It is a month when harvest festivals, artisan markets, music performances, and civic celebrations fill town plazas and coastal communities alike.

As the days shorten and the sunsets deepen into warm shades of gold and terracotta, Sonora’s cultural calendar becomes richer and more reflective. From local fairs and food festivals to early Día de los Muertos preparations and community gatherings, October offers visitors and residents a chance to experience the authentic rhythm of Sonoran life, rooted in tradition, hospitality, and regional pride.

Whether you are planning a weekend getaway, exploring cross-border travel, or simply looking for seasonal celebrations, October is one of the most inviting times of the year to discover Sonora.

Early October

University Theater Festival

Hermosillo (University of Sonora)

A multi-day theater festival featuring university performers and guest artists, often with dozens of productions and cultural activities.

Late September – Early October

Fiestas de Octubre

Magdalena de Kino

Magdalena’s October celebrations are among the most important in Sonora.

Hundreds of Catholic pilgrims walk to Magdalena each year to fulfill a manda (a promise made in exchange for a blessing). The fiestas honor San Francisco Javier, the town’s patron saint, and also connect to the broader devotion surrounding Saint Francis of Assisi.

Expect a unique blend of religious processions and ceremonies, cultural exhibits, music and food, crafts, and community celebrations.

Early October

Desert Racing

Puerto Peñasco

Off-road racing events draw teams and spectators from both Mexico and the United States, turning Rocky Point into a weekend hub for motorsports and coastal tourism.

12

Día de la Raza

Observed across Mexico, Día de la Raza commemorates the cultural and historical legacy that followed the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas. It is sometimes marked in schools and civic institutions.

Mid-October

Coastal Fishing Tournaments & Regattas

Puerto Lobos (Caborca region)

A fishing tournament weekend that may also include 4×4 off-roading, cycling rides, beach and sand activities.

Puerto Peñasco (Sandy Beach)

Regattas and boating events are common in October, often paired with dinners, raffles, and community celebrations.

Cultural Festivals

Puerto Peñasco

Puerto Peñasco often hosts major arts and music festivals in October, with events staged along the malecón and in public spaces.

Trincheras celebrates its patron saint, San Rafael, with religious observances and community festivities.

In some years, the celebration is paired with local heritage programming, including events connected to the folklore of Joaquín Murrieta, one of the most famous (and debated) Sonoran figures in regional legend.

Late October

Festival del Membrillo (Quince Festival)

San Ignacio / Magdalena region

A charming regional festival celebrating the membrillo (quince fruit), often featuring traditional sweets and preserves, local food, crafts, music, and community events.

Late October

Festival de la Calaca

Guaymas

One of the most distinctive cultural events of the season, this festival celebrates the artistry and symbolism of Día de Muertos through giant calaca figures, altar displays (ofrendas), music and cultural performances, processions, and family events.

Feast Day of San Judas Tadeo (St. Jude)

San Judas Tadeo, the patron saint of “impossible causes,” is widely revered in Sonora. Many towns and cities hold masses, processions, candlelight vigils, and community celebrations.

Late October

Cultural Festival

Empalme (Plaza Independencia / El Tinaco)

A regional cultural festival often featuring music, performances, and local heritage activities.

Late October

Day of the Dead Events Begin

Caborca

By the end of October, towns begin hosting Día de Muertos activities such as cemetery festivals, altar competitions, cultural presentations, and community gatherings.

Other October Events (Dates Vary by Year)

Often celebrated in northern Sonora, including San Luis Río Colorado, and sometimes Caborca and nearby agricultural regions.

Additional Festival de la Calaca Events

In some years, Día de Muertos cultural programming also takes place in Ciudad Obregón and other southern Sonoran cities.
