March Events in Sonora
March is one of Sonora’s most culturally distinctive months. As Lent continues, many of Sonora’s Indigenous communities, especially Yaqui and Mayo pueblos, begin the ceremonial processions, traditions, and weekly observances that build steadily toward Semana Santa (Holy Week), one of the most powerful and visible expressions of living tradition in northern Mexico.
March also brings some of Sonora’s best seasonal festivals, including coastal carnavales, regional food celebrations, cultural fairs, and major arts events such as the Álamos International Film Festival.

Early March (Dates Vary) — Carnaval Season Continues
Guaymas / Puerto Peñasco / other communities
While Carnaval is traditionally tied to the days leading up to Ash Wednesday, some Sonoran communities extend celebrations into early March depending on the calendar.
Expect parades, concerts, family-friendly events, street food, and nightly celebrations, especially in coastal cities.
Ash Wednesday (Miércoles de Ceniza) — Beginning of Lent
Statewide
Ash Wednesday marks the start of the Lenten season, a 40-day period of reflection and spiritual preparation leading up to Easter.
Across Sonora, many people attend Mass to receive ashes in the shape of a cross on the forehead. But in Indigenous Yaqui and Mayo communities, the season carries an especially deep ceremonial significance, and the weeks that follow become increasingly active with processions, ritual roles, and community gatherings.
Every Friday During Lent – Yaqui and Mayo Lenten Observances (“Conti”)
Yaqui and Mayo pueblos
In many Yaqui and Mayo communities, a Conti is held each Friday during Lent.
These gatherings may include community reunions and religious observances, processions and stations of the cross, traditional roles such as fariseos and ceremonial representatives, and a public rhythm of faith, tradition, and continuity.
For visitors, this is one of the most meaningful times of year to witness Sonora’s Indigenous cultural heritage. But it is also a time to observe respectfully, ask permission where appropriate, and remember that these are sacred community traditions, not performances.

Local Cultural Festivals
Ures / Hermosillo / Caborca / Nacozari and more
March is also a strong month for local festivals, including cultural fairs in historic towns like Ures, plaza-based spring festivals in Hermosillo, motorcycle club anniversary gatherings in Caborca, and free public concerts by the Orquesta Filarmónica de Sonora in rotating locations.
Travel Note
If you plan to visit Sonora in March, it’s a great time to explore both the coast and the mountain towns. But it is also a month when some communities may be especially focused on religious observances. If you encounter Yaqui or Mayo ceremonial activity, remember that respect, discretion, and local guidance matter.
