Dia de los Muertos – Day of the Dead Adornments in Sonora, Mexico
El Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is a Mexican tradition that interweaves ancient aspects of pre-Hispanic culture with Christian beliefs to create a unique annual event of remembrance for the departed.
The week before the Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, holiday, vendors of flowers and grave decorations begin to appear on the streets of Sonoran pueblos.
Traditional Day of the Dead flowers include marigolds, tiger’s claw and mums, but vendors will have a variety of brightly colored blooms to adorn graves and altars.
In addition, handmade circular decorations made of ribbons, flowers and other items, will be sold in stores and along the streets, especially those leading to the local Panteon, or cemetery.
During this time, cemeteries will be awash in brightly colored floral displays and filled with people visiting, cleaning and tending to the graves of their loved ones.
