2017 Pitic International Festival in Hermosillo

2017 Pitic International Festival

Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico
Festival del Pitic 2017 - Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico

Fiestas del Pitic

This year was the 15th year of this cultural, arts and music event to celebrate the founding of the city of Hermosillo, and it was a big party in the city center from May 25 to May 30, 2017.

The city was originally known as Pitic, and Hermosillo started the party in 2003 as the Fiestas del Pitic. Last year the name of the event was changed to the Festival International de Pitic, to make the gathering more of an international happening.

The festival is quite a remarkable event that transforms the areas around Plaza Zaragoza and Plaza Bicentenario, and other areas in the city, into a huge street party. Vendors of all kinds of Mexican and international cuisine, desserts, arts and crafts, bacanora and a variety of cold brewed beverages line the plazas and streets,

In addition, different sized stages set up throughout the downtown area as venues for music, theater plays and other entertainment that goes on continually throughout the afternoon and evening, and the streets were also filled with individual performers doing magic and performance art, reading fortunes or just posing for photos in exchange for a few pesos.

The main stage had a major performer or group every night, this year’s popular headliners were the Mexican duo Jesse y Joy. And to make this a truly international event one of the headliners this year was Christopher Cross, who I had last seen opening for the Eagles way back when. The festival also featured a variety of music genres from opera to rock, traditional and contemporary Mexican music, and even country and western.

And there are also fun, impromptu events and the Festival del Pitic. I was walking in the downtown area on the afternoon of the last day of the fiestas and joined with a crowd that was following actors, musicians, dancers and other performers in a walking history and music presentation that was very entertaining and informative.

To be honest, I had heard of the event but was not aware that it was in progress until I arrived in Hermosillo on May 30, the last day of the 2017 festivities. I am going to mark my calendar when the dates for next year’s festival are announced and will be sharing information for the 2018 Fiestas del Pitic, because the Festival is a very fun, relaxing, entertaining and delicious event.

So if you are interested in having a great intercultural experience among some of the most beautiful sights of the capital of Sonora, Mexico, I would recommend that you come to Hermosillo, Sonora to enjoy the Festival Internacional del Pitic. Stay tuned, we will post dates and information for the 2018 festival when they are announced.

Lifesaving Emergency Medical Services in Southern Sonora

Get to know Hospital San Jose in Navojoa

Last Saturday I read an obituary in the Tucson newspaper for a 52-year-old man who had died from a heart attack while at “his favorite place in Mexico.”

The article gave me pause, because the man was about my age. And it made me wonder how many deaths from sudden cardiac events and other medical emergencies in Mexico and other places could be prevented if people were more aware of available lifesaving emergency medical services in the areas where they live or vacation.

For those of us who love to spend time at our favorite places in Sonora, we accept certain risks that come along with traveling south of the border, and mitigate those risks by taking precautions and traveling safely. But oftentimes we do not consider potential medical emergencies in that planning.

If you plan to spend time in Mexico, do some basic research that could save your life. This is especially important if you are over 40 years old or have an existing medical condition or family history of heart disease or other issues.

Take the time to note the phone number of the local Red Cross and other first responders in the area where you will be staying, so you can quickly contact them in case of an emergency. Then go one step further to research regional hospitals that provide emergency care and trauma services.

If you are in Alamos, Navojoa or other nearby places in Southern Sonora, Mexico, I have done some of the research for you – and would recommend that you get to know Hospital San Jose in Navojoa, Sonora, also known as Clinica Hospital San Jose (CHSJ).

I toured the hospital earlier this month, and as someone who spent a career in and around medical device manufacturing and clinical care, I was impressed. In fact, I was so impressed that I added some of the information and photos from my visit to this website, including a contact form where you can get in touch with CHSJ to ask questions or schedule a visit for a tour.

Hospital San Jose is a modern, well-equipped facility with a talented professional staff who provide an array of world-class services, to include open-heart surgery and neurological surgical procedures. It has: the latest technology equipment; modern imaging technology, to include digital x-rays a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine; laboratory testing and analysis; a cardiac catheterization lab; an intensive care unit; an excellent rehabilitation facility, and basically everything that you would expect to see in a first-class medical facility in a major U.S. metropolitan area.

But don’t just take my word for it – contact the hospital to arrange a tour and visit. Learn about their special programs for international visitors. And get to know the staff and perhaps establish connections between CHSJ and your primary care physician and medical specialists, so that in case of a medical emergency you will be well prepared.

Enjoy your visit to the marvelous state of Sonora, Mexico. And be well.

Sonora’s New UNE Urban Transportation System Gets Two Thumbs Up!

Need to Get Around in Hermosillo, Ciudad Obregon or Navojoa?

Take the Une!

Thanks to a new urban transportation service in Sonora, you do not need to walk long distances or pay for a taxi while in Hermosillo, Ciudad Obregon or Navojoa – you can take an Une bus.

Une is a new public transit system funded by the state of Sonora with the goal of modernizing urban transportation in the entire state.

It is currently in the first phase of the program, with 140 climate-controlled buses driven by trained and certified operators that cover routes in the three major cities of Central and Southern Sonora, transporting more than 200,000 Sonorans every day. And the state government plans to expand the system to the entire state.

In Navojoa, the Unes start at the Mercado Municipal (Municipal Market) and fan out in circuitous routes to various parts of the city from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Une website is currently only in Spanish and only features Hermosillo routes, but most buses have route information written on them and if you are looking to go to a specific destination in Navojoa you can ask the driver when the bus is parked outside of the mercado.

When I visited Navojoa in April of 2017 I was pleasantly surprised to see the Unes driving by the home where I was staying. And even more pleased after I rode some of the buses and found that they went to all the local destinations that I wanted to visit.

The fare was 7 pesos, but you need to bring exact change or pay a bit more, because the toll machine located just inside the front door does not make change. The rides were air conditioned, smooth and enjoyable – a great way to get familiar with the city by looking outside the large windows of the Une.

The Une system also has some technological savvy. Buses are tracked via satellite in real time, riders can purchase an Une card and make online bus pass purchases, and there is even an Une app on their website. Une also has a Facebook page.

So keep the Une in mind as a viable transportation option when you are exploring Navojoa, Ciudad Obregon or Hermosillo – it really is a great service!
