The Centro de Cultura Blas Mazo in El Júpare, Sonora, is a community cultural center that features displays related to the culture and ethnic identity of the Yoreme Mayo.

The Centro Cultural also sponsors events and activities to share and strengthen Mayo traditions and culture, to include presentations of traditional dance and music, the native Mayo language, cuisine, book presentations and assemblies.

Static displays include items like traditional pottery; elements of a church altar; dolls that represent traditional dancers; ceremonial artifacts from traditional fiestas, like banners, masks and machetes; and a miniature depiction of a religious festival in front of a traditional indigenous church.

The Cultural Center is located behind the indigenous church in El Júpare. See the Google map for more location information.

Comfortable, Secure Accommodations in Downtown Huatabampo

The Hotel La Pasadita is a very nice two-story hotel located in the downtown shopping district of Huatabampo. It is within walking distance of the city’s main plaza and palacio municipal, grocery stores, shopping district, restaurants and local eateries.

Accommodations at La Pasadita are quiet, clean and comfortable. Each room has two comfortable full-size beds, room for clothing and luggage storage, a flat-screen TV and a large mini-fridge.

The hotel has free WiFi, and the Restaurant La Pasadita that adjoins the hotel serves very good traditional Mexican meals. There is also a nice balcony seating area on the second floor where you can watch the activity on the street below.

One potential drawback is that the hotel does not have any off-street parking. Spaces are available on the street in the evening, either directly in front of the hotel or within a short distance.

Comfortable, Secure Accommodations in a Great Huatabampo Location

The Hotel Alys is one of the nicer yet lesser-known hotels in Huatabampo for foreign visitors. This is because they do not pay commissions to hotel booking sites and their only web presence and contact options are in Spanish. But don’t let that deter you, they would love to show you their hotel and have you as a guest.

I have stayed at the Alys and found it to be a very comfortable place for a short-term or even longer-term stay in the area. The hotel rents rooms by the month and bi-monthly, and it also offers a very reasonable daily room rate.

Rooms have a mini-split air conditioner, abundant hot water, a flat-screen TV with cable, a microwave and a mini-refrigerator. They are recently renovated and very clean, and the beds are comfortable. And in the hallway outside the rooms are places to sit, relax and enjoy a conversation.

I also mentioned that it is secure – the police station is at the end of the block, they close and lock the gate at night, and the common areas are under video surveillance 24/7.

And, the Hotel Alys has a great location for exploring Huatabampo. The hotel is just down the street from the Red Cross and the city police and fire departments, and if you walk two blocks in the other direction you will find the Alvaro Obregon House Museum and an Oxxo convenience store.

Walk a few steps further and you are at the Huatabampo Palacio Municipal and Plaza Juarez – a location from which you can find stores, coffee shops and other places to see within walking distance.

And if you get hungry at night, next door to the hotel Don Chito fires up his grill at 8:00 p.m. to grill delicious carne asada. The Alys is a very laid-back place that is one of my favorite places to stay in Huatabampo.I hope you will enjoy it too.

Explore the Tehuelibampo Eco Museum

The Eco Museum at Tehuelibampo

The pueblo of Tehuelibampo, Sonora is the location of an archaeological site and eco-museum of the Yoreme Mayo culture and local natural environment, located on 25 acres of land near the Mayo River about 18 miles northeast of Navojoa, Sonora. The location derives its name from the word Tehueli-ba in the language of the Mayo, which means “blue water.”

The museum is located across the river from the road where it is accessed from Barrio Cantúa, Sonora. From December to March it can be accessed by a rowboat that is guided by a cable to the museum’s dock, and for the other eight months of the year there is a spot where the grassy riverbed is accessible on foot.

The Tehuelibampo Eco Museum is a marvelous building constructed of native stones that fits perfectly into the scenery of the terraced rock hill it sits atop of. Inside are beautiful ceiling murals painted by local muralist RV Payan, and the stone walls are adorned with paintings that depict ancient cave wall art and symbols depicted in petroglyphs carved into rocks around the area. There are also faux stone depictions of the local rock art that add a realistic accent to the place.

The museum is used as an educational site for groups of students to learn about the ancient and recent history of the Yoreme Mayo and the plants, animals and other features of the beautiful Southern Sonora river region environment where it is located.

Behind the museum is a nature path through a wooded area, where as you walk you can hear the calls from a variety of birds that are native to the region, or may be making a visit during their biannual migratory route.

The path leads to an opening between two large rock walls, where you will hike back into ancient history, observing the variety of more than 100 rock-art petroglyphs along the side walls that were carved into the rock between 2,500 and 3,000 years ago by the Proto-Mayan peoples.

The hike along the ravine ends at the Well of Enchantment, a local legend that promises clarity of mind and a personal learning experience if the person spends three nights at the well.

I want to thank my guides for showing me this marvelous place – Señor Atalio Jusacamea of Tehuelibampo and Señor Martin Soria, President of the Office of Conventions and Visitors (OCV) in Navojoa, Sonora. If you are interested in the ecology, history and culture of Southern Sonora, I would definitely recommend that you visit this marvelous place.

To arrange a visit to this unique, spiritual place, contact OCV Navojoa, call +52 (642) 421-5531 or +52 (642) 422-7260, or send them an email.  All of the contact information listed is in Spanish, if you do not speak Spanish you may contact us, and we can help to arrange a visit.
