Etchojoa Casa de la Cultura Museum

Museo Casa de la Cultura de Leonardo Vasquez Esquer - Etchojoa, Sonora

Leonardo Valdez Esquer loved Mexican history and culture. He collected thousands of items from all parts of Mexico, and when he died in 2014 he left behind an impressive collection of artifacts from indigenous cultures and life in Mexico.

The Museo Casa de la Cultura de Leonardo Valdez Esquer, located in the Southern Sonora city of Etchojoa, is an amazing museum of traditional art and modern culture. There is so much here that you can easily spend hours admiring the museum collection.

Its eight salons contain an amazing quantity and variety of museum pieces such as ceremonial masks and artifacts; ceramics, paintings and furniture; musical instruments; ancient wooden tools and grave markers; puppets and paper mache piñatas and figures; antique popular toys; an a collection of dolls.

After walking through the lush garden-patio entrance to the museum, the first great room is dedicated to the indigenous culture of the Mayo people of Southern Sonora and Northern Sinaloa. The walls are filled with masks, robes, banners, and wooden artifacts that had been used for washing and performing other chores.

Static displays demonstrate Mayo traditional religious ceremonies and other aspects of Mayo culture, including drums, harps and other musical instruments. I had originally thought that this large, (filled) room was the totality of the Leonardo Valdez Esquer collection. But it was just the first stop.

After the Mayo collection we entered a room filled with antique furniture, paintings, rugs and other furnishings. After that there was a room completely filled with masks from all over Mexico, a room filled with puppets and marionettes, a room filled with all kinds of antique dolls, a room filled with incredibly creative paper mache figures, a room with shelves and shelves of Mexican toys, and a room filled with ceramic wall hangings.

The final stop was the museum’s auditorium, which is used for educational presentations and other group gatherings.

Although you will never have the opportunity to meet Leonardo Valdez Esquer, after walking through this expansive and unique collection that he assembled, you may feel that you understand his love for art, history and culture based on the marvelous museum that he established.

The Museo Casa de la Cultura de Leonardo Valdez Esquer is located on highway 352, the Navojoa-Huatabampo highway, about 1/4 mile south of the railroad tracks in Etchojoa.

Plaza Juarez in Huatabampo, Sonora

Plaza Juarez is the cultural and social center of the Southern Sonora city of Huatabampo.

The plaza has a traditional bandstand-style kiosk at its center, with abundant shade trees and flowering plants. There is a snack bar at one end, lots of benches to sit and relax on, and a sitting area with picnic tables and a statue of children playing at its center.

In short, it is a very comfortable place to sit, relax and enjoy a conversation.

One one side of the plaza is the historic Palacio Municipal (city administration building), with its beautiful traditional design and interior murals. Across the street is the Iglesia Cristo Rey, a lovely church that is the religious center of the town. On the other side of the plaza is CafeTal, a very nice coffee shop and breakfast restaurant.

The Church of the Most Holy Trinity in El Júpare, Sonora is the religious center for religious ceremonies and traditional fiestas in this Southern Sonora town.

The Holy Trinity is a greatly revered religious image in this deeply religious community that was one of the original eight Mayo pueblos established by Jesuit missionaries in the early 1600’s.

And this indigenous church is the focal point for festivities for all Mayo traditional fiestas, especially so during the weekend of the Pentecost and the following weekend, which is the feast day of the Holy Trinity.

This simple, traditional church has its own beauty and spiritual significance, and is a must-see when you visit El Júpare. See the Google map of El Júpare to identify the location of the mission and other sites of interest in this lovely Mayo pueblo.

Yoreme Mayo Pastoral House

The Casa Pastoral Yoreme Mayo Itom Ayye María (Our Mother Mary) in El Júpare, Sonora is a unique place of worship that blends traditional Catholic sacraments with images of traditional indigenous Yoreme Mayo culture.

The church was built by members of the local community and members of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. The beautiful cultural images were painted by artist Jesús Gilberto Buitimea Estrella “Mota.”

It was inaugurated on May 23, 2017 with a bilingual mass celebrated by the bishop of the Diocese of Ciudad Obregón, Father Felipe Padilla Cardona.

Also in attendance at the inauguration were Father David Joseph Beaumont Pfeifer and other members of the Capuchin Order, dignitaries and other members of the Mayo Pueblo, and the Municipal President of Huatabampo, Heliodoro Soto Holguín, and his wife Andrea Ramírez de Soto.

A description of the inauguration published in the Tribuna del Yaqui  contains quotes that summarize well the origin and purpose of the pastoral house:

That the Mayo are deeply spiritual people whose dances, dress and symbols have sacred meaning to them, which is manifested in traditional ceremonies;

That the purpose of including religious and cultural symbols in a church sanctuary is to not only help preserve the meaning and practice of cultural traditions in the context of religion, but to communicate their meaning; and

That the existence of the Casa Pastoral provides a place where parishioners can have an encounter with God within the cultural manifestations of the Mayo people.

When you visit the Yoreme Mayo Pastoral House, sit quietly in a pew to observe the unique characteristics of the place, and reflect. And you will understand.
