April to June in Sonora
Seasonal Events and Travel Highlights
Across these three months, Sonora moves from peak spring travel into summer mode. April is the busiest spring month, to include a Semana Santa travel surge. May features cultural celebrations, warmer weather, and fewer crowds. And with June, summer begins, inland heat rises, and coastal travel becomes the focus.
In short, April is peak energy, May is cultural and transitional, and June is the start of summer rhythms.
April
Semana Santa, Beaches, and Peak Domestic Travel
April is often one of Sonora’s most active months for tourism, largely because it frequently includes Semana Santa (Holy Week) and sometimes Easter week as well.
During Semana Santa, coastal destinations such as Bahía de Kino, San Carlos, Puerto Peñasco, and other beach areas typically see a major increase in visitors. Roads, hotels, and restaurants can be significantly busier, and the overall atmosphere becomes festive, family-oriented, and high-energy.
April also brings important cultural and religious traditions across Sonora, including church processions and community observances, local fairs and seasonal events, family gatherings, and regional travel.
For visitors, April is often the month when Sonora’s “spring tourism season” reaches full speed. Read more.
May
Festivals, Family Celebrations, and the Start of Heat Season
May is a month of strong cultural identity in Mexico, and Sonora is no exception. While it’s not always driven by tourism-specific festivals, it is full of widely observed national and family-centered celebrations.
May is also when Sonora begins transitioning toward summer temperatures, especially inland in cities like Hermosillo. Coastal areas remain more comfortable, and May can still be an excellent month for beach travel, especially for visitors who want fewer crowds than during Semana Santa. Read more.
June
Summer Begins, Coastal Escapes, and Slower Tourism
June marks the start of Sonora’s true summer season. Temperatures rise sharply inland, and travel patterns begin to shift. Tourism often becomes more focused on coastal destinations with sea breezes, evening events and nightlife, shorter trips, and weekend travel rather than long inland excursions. Read more.
