Bacanora Certifications a First

Governor Durazo Issues First-Ever Bacanora Certifications in Sonora

Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño has made a historic first step toward strengthening and professionalizing the state’s bacanora industry by issuing the first official bacanora certifications and coding plates to local producers.

During the ceremony, Durazo delivered certifications to Alejandro Camou (Agroindustrias Delirio) and Jorge Rivas (Impulsora Vinícola Décima), along with official coding plates for 10 additional producers. The governor called the event “a small step for bacanora, but a big step for Sonora,” emphasizing that this milestone will help boost bacanora commercialization and expand exports.

Bacanora, a traditional Sonoran agave spirit with more than 300 years of history, holds a Denomination of Origin covering 35 municipalities in the state. Officials said the goal is to expand bacanora’s international reach, especially into the United States.

Eduardo Lemmen Meyer Baranzini, head of the Bacanora Regulatory Council, described the certifications as the beginning of a new era of regularization and legal certainty for producers by opening doors for competition in global markets and creating new opportunities for communities in the Sierra of Sonora.

The event was attended by Sonora’s Secretary of Economy and Tourism Roberto Gradillas Pineda, as well as U.S. Consul Drew Hoster in Hermosillo, signaling growing international attention for Sonora’s signature spirit.
