Sea Turtles Released in Desemboque, Comcaac Territory
Sonora newspaper El Imparcial reports that more than 1,500 olive ridley sea turtle hatchlings have been released into the ocean at Desemboque as part of conservation efforts led by the Comcaac Turtle Group.
According to group leader Efraín Alberto Estrella, 30 nests were protected this season, with approximately 20 already hatched and another 10 expected to hatch in the coming weeks. From July to the present, volunteers have carried out nightly patrols to locate turtle nests and relocate them to a protected enclosure, increasing the survival rate of the hatchlings.
However, mechanical problems with their motorbike temporarily interrupted monitoring activities, reducing the total number of nests collected for protection this season.
Community members and visitors interested in witnessing future hatchings can contact the Comcaac Turtle Group for more information.
This initiative highlights the ongoing commitment of the Comcaac people to marine conservation and the protection of endangered species along the Sonoran coast.
