Construction, Weather, and Vehicles Threaten Nesting Areas

Sea turtles are running out of safe nesting areas in Bahía de Kino as beachfront construction, severe weather, and motor vehicles reduce and disturb their natural habitat, according to members of the Bahía de Kino Turtle Group.

This season, only two out of seven recorded nests survived, a sharp decline from the typical five nests per year seen in previous seasons. Conservation volunteers report that ATVs, cars, and heavy machinery are causing vibrations that disrupt developing eggs, while recent high tides and storm surges flooded several nesting sites.

Urban development between Kino Viejo and the estuary has further diminished the available beach area, forcing turtles to attempt nesting in unsafe locations where waves and rising waters can destroy their eggs.

Conservationists warn that continued development along the coastline is pushing turtles away from the very beaches where they were born, threatening the long-term survival of local nesting populations.
